Travel: Near and FAR

When we think of travels, thoughts of far away places often come to mind. Certainly distant places are alluring and enticing for many of us. Learning about new cultures and places can enhance our lives.

Yet, there are many who either choose not to venture far from home or are unable to for a myriad of reasons. For those I would like to suggest that interesting and fun experiences can occur in the places we frequently visit. You may not need to deplete the checking account  for fun experiences. All we need is observation and a mind open to wonder.

For example, I offer my recent experience of a trip to Costco. I like Costco for several reasons, among which are prices and organic offerings. However, I had not thought about it as being a fun and educational experience until recently.

It was a sunny day and almost lunch time. I was beginning to be a bit nibblish but was intent on completing my “to do” list before going home. Thus, I secured a parking place, grabbed a cart and scanned my card and the entry door.

I had a list. Interspaced between the items i needed were several tasting stations offering new and sometimes exotic foods. I stopped by several to sample the offerings.  My hunger was assuaged and I had new ideas for entertaining friends. Additionally, my brain was attuned to the idea that there may be other new products I could learn about. And so I set off to tour the store.

My dopamine surged! Although I didn’t feel the need to buy, I learned about new products to consider for my potentials list. I learned about new ways to charge vehicles; new lighting systems for the yard; new kitchen appliances; new tech. And I did find gorgeous hydrangea plants that I couldn’t resist.

Also, I began to pay more attention to my fellow shoppers and found the dynamics between couples and families fascinating.

So, my shopping visit was a success because I found the items on my list. But more than that, it turned into a learning and enjoyable adventure without the expenses of a far away trip.

Next up: notes, pictures of a trip to Croatia.
